This was the Spanish word of the week down here in the East Cape. Early in the week while the winds were blowing from the north, we saw lots of sails gliding across the water, as the windsurfers took to the water in full force. Later in the week when the winds laid down, the fishermen took to the water and landed over 200 sailfish in only 4 days.
Billfish were the primary target this week as the 4th Annual Salt Patrol Marlin tournament took center stage at Hotel Palmas De Cortez. This group mostly from Washington went after the big points that came with each billfish landed and released. Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo also counted in the points total but in much smaller numbers. Anyone who brought in a billfish was automatically disqualified. We saw 10 blue marlin, 140 stripe marlin, and as mentioned before, over 200 sailfish landed and released this week between the four Van Wormer Resorts.
It was a bit of a slow week for yellowfin tuna and dorado as most anglers were after billfish, but we did see approximately 200 dorado, 80 yellowfin tuna, 12 wahoo, 10 amber jacks, and 8 pargo this week. The big story came out of Cabo San Lucas, where the Western Outdoor News Big Tuna Jackpot is taking place this week.
One angler landed the biggest yellowfin tuna ever weighed on a regulation IGFA scale in the history of Cabo San Lucas. This monster tuna weighed in at a whopping 383 lbs. It was the 5 largest yellowfin ever weighed anywhere in the world. The tuna was reportedly caught near the Gordo Banks near San Jose Del Cabo. Congratulations to everyone involved in landing that tremendous fish.
The water temperatures here in the East Cape have cooled down a bit. We had been in the mid 80's and this week we have seen the waters in the upper 70's. The air temperature has been a very comfortable 86 degrees in the day and dropping down to the mid to upper 70's at night.
