Fishing Report
10/1/12
Hola amigos,
It was a great week in Los Barriles both for fishermen and locals alike. The week started off with the cruiser El Loco landing a 206# Yellowfin tuna. The monster tuna was hooked just south of La Ribera near Los Frailes. That seemed to be the spot for the entire week. Later in the week, after the report came down that there were cows found near Frailes, we saw a tuna in the 160# range and quite a few in the 50-100lb. range. Wednesday the Billfighter came to the dock with a nice tuna over 100lbs., but the real surprise was the 50lb. Wahoo they landed while trolling for Dorado. They had also landed a smaller Wahoo which was estimated at about 25lbs. On Thursday, Mark Daugherty of East Cape Guides when fishing with Bill and Christie Shedd of Aftco and had a wonderful time landing a couple of nice Dorado and a big Pargo. The fishing was wide open. Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Big Tuna, Dorado up to 50lbs., nice Pargo, Sailfish, Roosters, and more. Then came the tropical storm Norman on Friday and shot down the fishing for the day. All boats were pulled out of the water as reports of high winds and big swells made the hotel scramble to protect the fleet. The storm ended up hitting the main land side of Mexico, but the swells were impacting the East Cape and made it impossible to fish that day. Saturday the boats were back in service and the fleet was back to fishing. It was not as good as it had been earlier in the week, but it is holding steady.
The big event this week in Los Barriles took place on Saturday, as the annual Casting 4 Soles Tournament and shoe give away took place. This event is now in its 6th year and every year seems to draw bigger and bigger crowds. Casting 4 Soles is the brain child of Jack McCulloch owner of McCulloch’s Wide Shoes. McCulloch was able to bring the fishing community together with the shoe community to put this event together. Each year volunteers from both industries travel to Los Barriles to give away brand new shoes and t-shirts to the local community. This year more than 40 volunteers traveled from the U.S. and more than 30 local volunteers helped to distribute more than 2,000 pairs of shoes and t-shirts. “When we arrived to the event site at 5am there were about 500 people in line to receive shoes” said McCulloch. “We started handing them out at about 6am and at 11:30am we had gone through more than 2,000 people”. If you would like to be a part of next year’s Casting 4 Soles event or would like to make a donation to this wonderful event, please email me at eddie@vanwormerresorts.com .
