Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 4/17/13 Hola Amigos, Well it is that time of the year again. The fishing season is upon us and we have had a few boats going out each day for the last couple of weeks. Still not enough to get a clear picture of what is really out there but enough to say there are fish to be had. It is been a typical April season with an early yellowtail bite which quickly disappeared and headed north. It was nothing like last season’s yellowtail bite which was the best we have had in more than 20 years. This one lasted about 3 weeks and right around the first week of April the bite shut down. Focus quickly shifted to striped marlin, dorado and roosters. For the last few weeks we have seen some nice big striped marlin in the 170-180 range. There is lots of small squid in the water, so many of the marlin are gorging on squid and not hitting the lures or live bait. Some anglers have reported seeing small squids coming out of the mouths of some marlin as they were fighting them. The dorado bite has been a bit slow, but they are out there. We are not seeing big numbers, but a few are coming in every day. More recently the talk has been about the rooster bite down south by La Ribera and Lighthouse point. Many anglers have taken super pangas out that way hand have found some nice 20-40 pound roosters in the area. A few have had success fishing them from the beach. Last week we even saw a rare wahoo landed by a guest here at Palmas De Cortez. I can’t remember the last time we saw a wahoo in April. Let’s hope it is a sign of good things to come. That is it for now amigos. As more and more boats start going out in the upcoming weeks, I should have more info to pass along. Until then, Tight Lines!
