Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 7/12/13 Hola Amigos, Well I have run out of adjectives to describe how good the fishing has been this season, so let me just say it doesn’t get much better than this! The term WFO is often over used in our industry, but there is no better way to describe the fishing in the East Cape right now. This week has been off the charts for striped marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna and roosters. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many species in such great numbers. For example, boats are coming in with 4 billfish, 6 tuna, 6 dorado in one day. “A little bit of everything”. The billfish seem to be everywhere. Running out to the tuna or dorado, many captains are stopping along the way and landing a couple of billfish and then continuing on. Then they hit the tuna school for a while and then mover over and hit some dorado. Then on the way back they hit a few more billfish and then call it a day and head back to the hotel. Everyone around the pool bar has a smiling face and they are all sharing fish stories while enjoying a cold cerveza. The dorado bite has been hot to the north near the buoys and the ocho ocho. They have also been landing some big bulls to the south near Frailes. We are starting to see more numbers and they are still some very big fish. The dorado this week have ranged from 20-55 lbs. and have been coming in each day. They have been landing them on ballyhoo and small to medium size lures. The tuna bite has also been wide open and one of the biggest tuna this year was landed yesterday by the Fresh Catch and captain Mario Cota fishing with guest from the Britten Pond group from Southern California. The tuna weighed in at an impressive 220lbs. There were a few more that weighed over a hundred and another 30 that come in over 50lbs. but the majority were nice size football tuna. The Billfish are everywhere. We saw more blues this week than in previous weeks, to add to what is already and epic billfish season. The sailfish and striped marlin are in very thick and many boats are landing 6 or more per day. We also saw a nice swordfish landed by the Jen Wren and one by the super panga sibony today. The blue marlin that were landed were in the 200-350lb. range, but no monsters yet. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some just in time for the East Cape Bisbee at the end of the month. The roosterfish bite has also been on fire for those who can break away from all the other action that is going on right now. A few super pangas today went for roosters and landed 7-10 each with the biggest one coming in at just over 40lbs. We also had some amber jack, trigger fish, pargo and a few wahoo as well. The air temps are heating up as the humidity levels start to rise. Day time highs have been in the mid 90’s with the overnight low in the low 70’s. Water temps have been right around 78-82 degrees. The entire East Cape is gearing up for the upcoming Dorado Shoot Out with will be held on Saturday July 20th. If you have not entered the tournament yet, it is not too late. Signups will be accepted up until Friday, July 19th at Hotel Palmas De Cortez. Hope you will make plans to join us. That is it for this week amigos! Until next week!
