Fishing Report
7/31/13
Hola Amigos,
Well it’s been a very busy two weeks down on the East Cape. With the Dorado Shoot Out taking place on July 20th with 128 teams, quickly followed by the East Cape Bisbee with a record 70 teams participating, we now have a brief chance to catch our breaths. Although we are taking a breath from tournaments, the hotels continue to be full and lots of boats are going out each day. The fishing has continued to be red hot and we continue to see lots of smiling faces around the hotel bars in the afternoon. Anglers are coming in with limits on Yellowfin Tuna, mostly football size, but we did see a few monsters. As we reported on Friday, Chucky Van Wormer landed a monster tuna coming in at 192lbs. which took the Tuna division at this year’s East Cape Bisbee. We saw a few tuna in the 50, 70 and 100lb. range all week, but like I said earlier, mostly football size. The dorado bite has slowed down a bit form what it was a few weeks ago. We are still seeing dorado each day, but we are not seeing the size nor the numbers we were just a few weeks ago. I still feel that it has been a below average on dorado, so I think there is a much better bite to come. The billfish continue to be in and we are seeing plenty of striped marlin and sailfish with the occasional blue. This has been an above average year for billfish, especially this early in the year. Typically we see these sorts of numbers from August to November. I hope that it continues for the rest of the year. The bite has been down south of late, near Los Frailes, which means anglers can expect a 1.5 to 2 hour boat ride to get into some prime time action with the tuna and dorado. The water temps have been in the 80’s and the air temps are quickly rising into the upper 90’s with a real feel into the low 100’s. In the East Cape when the weather warms up, so does the fishing, so it should be getting really good really fast! That’s it for this week amigos! Until next time!
